BJP senior leader and Member of Parliament Etela Rajender participated in the fish seed release program at Shamirpet Lake and urged the government to take fisheries development more seriously.
He said that fish are an essential source of protein and millions of families in India depend on fisheries for their livelihood. In the past, contractors had control over lakes and fishermen suffered because of that system. After the formation of Telangana, the government gave full fishing rights to the members of fisheries societies, he recalled.
He further stated that though the government has created integrated plans for fish seed supply, feed support, lake management, ice factories and transport facilities, there are still some technical issues that need to be resolved.
Growing lake pollution in Hyderabad is a major concern
Expressing concern over the increasing pollution in urban lakes around Hyderabad, Etela Rajender said:
“Drainage water should not be directly released into lakes. It must be purified or diverted. Lakes are a blessing for us… we must protect them.”
Etela highlights Central Government focus
Etela Rajender praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for establishing a separate Ministry for Fisheries at the national level, saying it reflects the Centre’s commitment to the sector. He also promised that if government land is allotted to fisheries societies, he would take responsibility for constructing buildings for their use.
“Government is not separate from people. People themselves are the government,” Etela said.
Officials who participated in the program
Deputy Director of Fisheries Hanumanth Rao, District Fisheries Officer Sukruti, District DFCS President Manne Raju, Vice President Mohan Krishna, Director M. Venkatesh, P. Devender, Ramu, FCS Shamirpet President Raju, DFO Sreekanth, BJP District President Buddhi Srinivas, Mandal President Krishna Mudiraj, former Sarpanch Sudarshan and others participated.
